Reading is the county town of Berkshire, South-East England, home of Reading University and the annual Reading Festival. In the 8th century Reading Abbey was one of the largest and wealthiest abbeys in the country, and the town was known as Readingas, which is thought to refer to the Anglo-Saxon tribe "Reada's People". By 1525 Reading was the largest town in Berkshire and by the 19th century, due to the Great Western Railway, the town was prospering in ironworks, manufacturing, and brewing. In the present day, Reading is an important commerical centre in the UK, hosting offices for many major companies, including Microsoft, PepsiCo, Wrigley, and Prudential.
