Leicester is the county town of Leicestershire in the East Midlands of England and is one of the oldest cities in England with a history going back to the second or first century BC. The name Leicester was first recorded in the early ninth century as the Latinised 'Legorensis civitatis' and, in the 1086 Doomsday book, Leicester is written as Ledecestre. In the 1790s the Grand Union Canal provided a link from Leicester to Birmingham and London and, by 1840, the Midland Counties Railway linked Leicester to the national rail network. Throughout the Industrial era, Leicester was known for its textile and shoe manufacture, and for its steel works.
