Lambeth Metropolitan Borough Council was created by the London Government act 1963. In 1965, the authority became Lambeth London Borough Council and took over nearly half of the former Wandsworth Metropolitan Borough Council, which included Streatham and Clapham.

Lambeth London Borough Council owns and maintains three cemeteries; Lambeth cemetery, Streatham cemetery, and West Norwood cemetery. Both Lambeth and West Norwood cemeteries also contain a crematorium.

Lambeth cemetery in Tooting was opened in 1854, and the crematorium and gardens adjacent opened in 1958.

Streatham cemetery, also in Tooting, was opened in 1893.

West Norwood is a Grade II* listed site on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. It was founded in 1837 and soon became the most fashionable place to be buried in South London. Its beautiful grounds are home to a great many Victorian memorials and monuments, many of which are listed. It is the second of the 'Magnificent Seven' London cemeteries.
