Exeter is the county town of Devon and the city is located on the river Exe. Exeter was established as a Roman base and, during the medieval and Tudor times, was a centre for religion. Exeter's modern name came from the Old English "Escanceaster"; 'Escan' being the name of the river, and 'ceaster' meaning fortified town. In 876 Escanceaster was attacked and briefly held by vikings from Denmark, until they were driven out by Alfred the Great the following summer. By the 19th century the city became well known for wool trade, and is nowadays a hub for tourism and modern business. Exeter boasts a wealth of historic architecture, from the cathedral to the Exeter Synagogue, the third oldest in Britain, to the ruins of Rougemont Castle, to Tudor buildings.
