Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES) is a unitary authority within the county of Somerset in South West England.

B&NES covers an area of 136 square miles (352 km2) bordering the outskirts of Bristol in the north west, the Mendip Hills to the south west, the Cotswold Hills in the north east and the county of Wiltshire on its south east border.

With a population of 84,000, the historic city of Bath is, by far, the largest settlement in the district, but the council area also covers the towns of Keynsham, Midsomer Norton, Radstock, Westfield and the Chew Valley.

The area has varied geography including river valleys and rolling hills. The history of human habitation is long but expanded massively during Roman times, and played significant roles in the Saxon era and English civil war. Industry developed from a largely agricultural basis to include coal mining with the coming of canals and railways. Bath developed as a spa resort in Georgian times and remains a major cultural tourism centre having gained World Heritage City status.

Records on Deceased Online
There are nearly 200,000 individual records on Deceased Online comprising digital scans of registers and grave details for each grave (for cemeteries); there are section maps of grave locations available for most cemeteries although coverage of each cemetery is patchy in some periods. The cemeteries and crematorium in this collection are indicated below together with number of records per site and the year range:

- St James Cemetery (formerly Lyncombe, Widcombe and St James), 24,400 records, 1861 to 2011
- St Michael's Cemetery, 3,650 records, 1851 to 2008
- Twerton/Bellots Road Cemetery, 8,550 records, 1882 to 2003
- Haycombe Crematorium, approx 90,000 records, 1961 to 1996

The following cemeteries are in the process of preparation. Extensive investigation will be required before these records can be made available:

- Bathwick Cemetery, 2,150 records, 1861 to 1998
- Harptree Cemetery, 1,050 records, 1884 to 2011
- Haycombe Cemetery, 15,000 records, 1937 to 1990
- Locksbrook Cemetery, total 41,500 records, 1864 to 2010

Now a nature conservation site, Locksbrook is a beautiful Victorian cemetery which incorporates three 'sub' cemeteries; St Saviour's, Walcot and Weston. It features many splendid monuments and memorials and has many war and military graves 122 of which are in the care of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. In addition to these, there are a number of fascinating graves dating from the Indian mutiny and the Crimean War, five of which are recipients of the Victoria Cross.
