Although North East Lincolnshire is a unitary authority area only formed in 1996, it has many historic towns and areas of population. The largest and probably best known is the old port and fishing town of Grimsby which forms a conurbation with neighbouring town Cleethorpes that between them have a population of approximately 130,000.

The two cemeteries servicing the area date back to the late mid-19th century and reflect much of the industry and employment associated with the area: fishing and shipping.

During WW2, Grimsby was the UK's largest base for minesweepers patrolling the North Sea and the Admiralty requisitioned many of the fishing trawlers to help with minesweeping. This heritage was remembered in the name of HMS Grimsby a Sandown class minehunter of the British Royal Navy serving from 1999 to 2022.

The records available to view are from the following cemeteries and crematorium:

  • Cleethorpes Cemetery: records from 1877 - 2021
  • Scartho Road Cemetery: records from 1889 - 2021
  • Grimsby Crematorium: records from 1954 - 2021

We also have available burial registers for the closed Ainslie Street Cemetery (now a public park) for nearly 15,000 burials records from 1855-1943.

There are approximately 185,000 burials and cremations available and the range of records comprises:
- Digital scans of burial and cremation registers,
- Grave details of all burials and cemetery
- Section maps showing the approximate location of graves (excluding Ainslie Street).

Note: to comply with UK data protection and GDPR, addresses of the deceased are masked in register scans for the last 15 years.
