Although North East Lincolnshire is a unitary authority area only formed in 1996, it has many historic towns and areas of population. The largest and probably best known is the old port and fishing town of Grimsby which forms a conurbation with neighbouring town Cleethorpes that between them have a population of approximately 130,000.
The two cemeteries servicing the area date back to the late mid-19th century and reflect much of the industry and employment associated with the area: fishing and shipping.
During WW2, Grimsby was the UK's largest base for minesweepers patrolling the North Sea and the Admiralty requisitioned many of the fishing trawlers to help with minesweeping. This heritage is remembered even today and HMS Grimsby is a Sandown class minehunter (commissioned in 1999) currently in service in the Royal Navy.
